WASHINGTON, D.C. — Three recent reports from academic and policy organizations conclude that U.S. democracy has declined significantly since President Donald Trump returned to office, though the administration disputes those findings.
A report from the Sweden-based V-Dem Institute lowered the U.S. democracy ranking from 20th to 51st globally, citing increased executive power and reduced institutional checks. Freedom House similarly reported declines in political rights and civil liberties, placing the U.S. among countries with the sharpest recent drops.
Bright Line Watch, which surveys hundreds of political scientists, found the U.S. system now falls between a liberal democracy and a dictatorship. Researchers pointed to concerns over pressure on institutions, media criticism, and shifts in foreign policy related to democratic norms.
The White House rejected the reports, calling them biased and defending Trump as a supporter of transparency and democratic governance. Trump has also denied accusations of authoritarianism.
Some scholars noted that judicial rulings, including a recent Supreme Court decision against administration tariffs, suggest institutional checks remain active. Others said future elections could determine whether current trends continue.
