Washington, D.C. — A new national survey finds Americans are far more likely to feel concern than excitement about artificial intelligence as the technology becomes more common in work, media, health care, and daily life.
The “Americans on AI” poll, shared with The Hill by Athena Insights, found that 65% of respondents said they were either very or somewhat concerned about AI’s growing role in society. By comparison, 24% said they were very or somewhat excited.
The survey found similar concern across political parties, even as lawmakers continue to disagree over how aggressively the federal government should regulate AI. About 70% of respondents said AI is entering their lives whether they want it or not, while 15% said people like them can shape how much AI becomes part of their lives.
The poll also found that about 70% of respondents said AI is making it harder to distinguish what is real. More Americans also said the government is not doing enough to address AI’s effects on children, workers, jobs, and the environment.
The survey was conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago in partnership with Early Studies from June 24-29 among 1,814 Americans. The margin of error was 3.4 percentage points.
