California Governor Gavin Newsom is introducing emergency legislation that will allow doctors from Arizona to provide reproductive health care services in California. This move comes in response to the recent decision by the Arizona Supreme Court to uphold a law from 1864 that bans most abortions.
Newsom hopes his legislation will take effect on May 1, before Arizona begins enforcing their law, which could be in effect no later than June 8. He expressed concern about the impact of restrictive abortion laws on women’s rights, noting that 160,000 women had to leave their states last year to access reproductive care.
The governor’s office is working with the offices of Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes to finalize the legislation. The details and exact timing of the emergency legislation are yet to be announced.
