WASHINGTON, DC — Donald Trump has canceled a planned diplomatic trip to Pakistan by senior envoys as negotiations with Iran stalled, underscoring continued tensions despite a temporary ceasefire.
The canceled trip would have sent advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad for indirect talks with Iranian officials. The effort aimed to revive diplomacy and build momentum toward a broader agreement.
Trump said he called off the mission after concluding the talks would not be productive. “We’re not going to go there to sit around talking about nothing,” he said, adding that the U.S. could continue discussions remotely.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had already departed Pakistan after meeting with local leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military officials, without engaging U.S. representatives. Iranian officials reiterated that lifting a U.S. naval blockade remains a precondition for further negotiations.
While a ceasefire remains in place, officials on both sides acknowledged little progress in recent days. Trump also suggested internal divisions within Iran’s leadership have complicated the process.
