Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he plans to campaign for Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton, but not before delivering a lengthy critique of Paxton’s appearance and television presence.
Speaking at a Rose Garden dinner with Republican lawmakers, Trump said voters “might not like the way he looks” or dresses, but argued that Paxton’s record as Texas attorney general mattered more.
“You might not love his look. You might not love his television interviews,” Trump said, before calling Paxton “the best attorney general in the country.”
Paxton is running against Democratic nominee James Talarico in one of the most closely watched Senate races of the 2026 midterms. Recent polling has shown a competitive contest, with some surveys favoring Talarico, others showing a tie, and at least one putting Paxton ahead.
Trump said he intends to focus heavily on roughly 35 competitive races during the final 30 days before the Nov. 3 election. He also floated holding multiple “tele town halls” in a single evening to boost Republican candidates.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has said Republicans will need Trump’s help in Texas because of the cost of campaigning statewide. Paxton and Talarico have together raised nearly $100 million, underscoring the race’s national importance.
Trump said he wants party leaders to identify candidates who are tied, narrowly ahead or slightly behind so he can concentrate his campaign appearances where they could have the greatest effect.
