ALLEN, Texas — Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton was briefly drowned out by protesters Tuesday while presenting an affordability plan aimed at reducing medical and housing costs for Texans.
Loud boos forced Paxton to pause during a campaign rally as he introduced his “Protecting the Texas Promise” plan. Supporters eventually responded with cheers, allowing the Texas attorney general to continue. “I don’t think she’s gonna like the plan,” Paxton joked about one protester.
Paxton proposed a federal tax deduction of up to $25,000 for medical expenses and insurance premiums, including costs for dependents. His housing proposal would offer a $50,000 deduction to first-time homebuyers and another $50,000 deduction when purchasing a new primary residence.
The disruption comes as Paxton faces an unexpectedly competitive race against Democrat James Talarico. A Texas Southern University survey found Talarico leading 47% to 45%, within the poll’s 2.83-point margin of error. A Fox News poll separately placed Talarico ahead by three points.
Paxton has struggled particularly with independent voters, while Talarico has benefited from heavy advertising and Paxton’s high unfavorable ratings. Still, Republicans retain a strong statewide advantage, and Texas has not elected a Democratic senator since 1988.
