KILN, MS — Middle school students in Mississippi are being credited with preventing a potential crash after their school bus driver lost consciousness during an emergency on a highway.

The incident occurred Wednesday shortly after the bus departed Hancock Middle School in Kiln. Driver Leah Taylor suffered an asthma attack and passed out while behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to begin swerving.

Sixth-grader Jackson Casnave, 12, quickly took control of the steering wheel. “I didn’t have time to process my emotions,” he told the Associated Press. “I just wanted to make sure that nobody got hurt.” Another student, Darrius Clark, attempted to slow the bus by applying the brakes as it accelerated.

Working together, the students managed to guide the bus into the median and bring it to a stop. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Kayleigh Clark called 911 as other students assisted the unconscious driver. One student used the driver’s nebulizer to help her breathe, while another supported her head and contacted school officials.

Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and treated Taylor, who has since recovered. The students were later recognized for their actions during a school pep rally.

Taylor praised the group, saying she was grateful for their quick thinking and courage during the emergency.
