WASHINGTON, DC — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Sunday that impeaching Donald Trump would not be a top priority if Democrats regain control of the House in the next election cycle.
Speaking on Fox News, Jeffries dismissed impeachment as a central focus, saying, “Of course not,” when asked directly. Instead, he emphasized that Democrats would prioritize addressing cost-of-living concerns, including housing, healthcare, and wages.
“Our top priority is going to be to drive down the high cost of living,” Jeffries said, outlining a broader agenda centered on economic issues and what he described as restoring access to the “American Dream.”
The comments come after earlier speculation about renewed impeachment efforts, which have largely stalled due to a lack of votes in the current Republican-controlled House. Rep. Greg Meeks echoed that reality in prior remarks, noting that without sufficient support, such efforts are not feasible.
Jeffries also pointed to Democratic strategies for regaining a House majority, including redistricting efforts and increased focus on working-class voters following setbacks in the 2024 election.
President Trump previously warned Republican lawmakers that he could face impeachment if the GOP loses control of Congress, keeping the issue in the political backdrop ahead of midterm campaigns.
Jeffries said economic messaging would remain central as Democrats seek to regain ground with voters.
