Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump is struggling across national polling as the midterm elections approach, with affordability emerging as one of his weakest issues, according to New York Times reporter and CNN analyst Maggie Haberman.
“There is no polling where this president is popular,” Haberman said Monday on CNN’s “The Source.” She added that Trump is also consistently underwater on affordability, an issue Republicans in competitive districts increasingly view as a liability.
The comments came as CNN polling showed Trump with a net approval rating of negative 32 percentage points, compared with negative 21 points for the Republican Party overall.
Other surveys have also shown Trump near or at the lowest approval levels of his second term. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll placed his approval at 33%, while broader polling averages have generally shown him performing somewhat better than that single survey.
Haberman cautioned that public polls do not always match private polling she has seen, but said the overall trend remains difficult for the president.
The White House has recently emphasized affordability in public events, despite Trump previously dismissing Democratic criticism over rising costs as a political “hoax.”
Republican leaders are nevertheless making Trump central to their midterm strategy. Trump has urged supporters to vote as though he were personally “on the ballot,” hoping to maximize turnout among his base.
The November elections will test whether Trump’s continued strength with core Republican voters can offset his weaker standing with the broader electorate.
