WASHINGTON, D.C. — A House Democrat is calling for potential reparations tied to immigration enforcement, highlighting growing political divisions over federal deportation policies.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) said during a congressional hearing Friday that families affected by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions may deserve compensation for what she described as trauma caused by enforcement practices. The hearing, focused on immigration enforcement impacts, examined federal actions under the Trump administration.
According to , Jayapal stated, “We are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and the families that have been traumatized through all of this,” suggesting the idea could advance if Democrats gain congressional control.
Jayapal, who serves as a ranking member on a House immigration subcommittee, also called for increased oversight and potential legal consequences for immigration officials involved in enforcement operations. She argued that accountability measures, including possible prosecutions, should be considered.
The proposal drew criticism from conservative commentators, who characterized the remarks as politically motivated. At the same time, Jayapal reiterated her opposition to funding for ICE and Customs and Border Protection without what she described as significant reforms.
