LOS ANGELES, CA — A large demonstration tied to opposition against the Trump administration escalated into clashes with law enforcement over the weekend, resulting in dozens of arrests in downtown Los Angeles.
Thousands gathered for the “No Kings” protest, part of a broader nationwide movement criticizing immigration enforcement policies and federal authority. While most of the event remained peaceful, tensions rose late in the afternoon near the Metropolitan Detention Center, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees are held.
According to officials, a smaller group of roughly 150 to 200 individuals began throwing rocks, bottles, and concrete at federal officers. The Los Angeles Police Department responded by issuing a tactical alert and deploying tear gas to disperse the crowd. Authorities later declared an unlawful assembly and ordered protesters to leave the area.
By Sunday, police confirmed 75 arrests linked to the unrest. At least two officers were injured after being struck by debris and required medical treatment. Video from the scene also showed graffiti targeting federal agents, including threats directed at ICE personnel.
Officials said some individuals appeared prepared for confrontation, wearing protective gear such as respirators and goggles. Federal prosecutors warned that additional arrests could follow, citing video evidence of those involved in the violence.
The demonstration had been scheduled to end earlier in the evening but continued as tensions escalated.
