COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Former South Carolina Gov. and Congressman Mark Sanford has entered the race for his former congressional seat, filing paperwork just before the GOP primary deadline.
Sanford will compete in the June 9 Republican primary for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, a seat he previously held for multiple terms.
Sanford, 65, first rose to national prominence as a fiscal conservative and later served as governor. His political career was significantly impacted by a widely publicized 2009 scandal involving an extramarital affair, which drew national attention but did not immediately end his tenure.
He returned to Congress in 2013, winning back his former seat before losing a GOP primary in 2018 to a challenger backed by President Donald Trump. Since then, Sanford briefly launched a 2020 presidential bid focused on national debt concerns but withdrew before early primaries.
His latest campaign again emphasizes fiscal issues, including federal spending and debt. Sanford enters a crowded primary field as the seat becomes open, with current Rep. Nancy Mace running for governor.
Sanford retains more than $1.3 million in campaign funds, which could provide an advantage in the upcoming race.
