NASHVILLE, Tennessee — A 6-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot inside a home, leading to the arrest of his father, according to local authorities.
Police said Steven Lamont Phillips, 56, told investigators he had been playing with his son before falling asleep with a firearm in his pocket. He reported waking to the sound of a gunshot and finding the child injured, then called for help from a relative to contact emergency services.
The child was transported to a hospital and remains in extremely critical condition.
Authorities arrested Phillips on charges of aggravated child neglect and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Officials said he is currently on probation related to a recent felony attempted theft conviction earlier this month.
The incident remains under investigation as police review the circumstances surrounding how the firearm discharged. Cases involving unsecured firearms and children continue to raise safety concerns among law enforcement and public health officials.
