Columbia, South Carolina — President Donald Trump said he has asked Darline Graham, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to run for a full U.S. Senate term in South Carolina.
Reuters reported that Trump posted Friday that Darline Graham would be the best person to honor her brother’s legacy and said she would have his “complete and total endorsement” if she enters the special Republican primary.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham earlier this week to fill her brother’s vacant Senate seat through early January. The special GOP primary for the full term is scheduled for Aug. 11, with filing set to open July 21.
Lindsey Graham died Saturday at age 71 from a heart ailment, according to his office. His memorial services are scheduled for July 28 in Washington and July 29 in South Carolina.
The race could draw several high-profile Republicans, including Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and U.S. Reps. Russell Fry, Nancy Mace, and Ralph Norman. Trump’s endorsement would give Graham an immediate advantage in a crowded primary.
