Columbia, South Carolina — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to temporarily fill her brother’s Senate seat.
Nordone will serve through Jan. 3, 2027, finishing the remainder of Graham’s current term after his sudden death over the weekend. McMaster said the appointment honored Graham’s legacy and the close bond he shared with his younger sister.
Nordone thanked McMaster and said she would work to support President Donald Trump and continue her brother’s efforts for South Carolina. Trump had endorsed her appointment earlier Monday, calling it a fitting tribute to Graham.
Nordone has not served in elected office, but The Associated Press reported she has worked in disability services and was a longtime supporter of Graham’s political career. Graham became her guardian after their parents died within 15 months of each other when he was in his early 20s and she was 13. He later legally adopted her so she could receive military benefits.
A special Republican primary will take place in August for the full six-year term. Graham had been seeking reelection before his death.
