Columbia, South Carolina — Rep. Nancy Mace is considering a run for the U.S. Senate after the sudden death of longtime South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham opened an unexpected Republican vacancy.
Axios reported that two sources familiar with Mace’s thinking said she is “strongly considering” entering the race. Mace has not formally announced a campaign, but she told reporters she would “certainly take a look at it” if South Carolina voters wanted her to serve in that role.
Graham died Saturday at age 71 after what his office described as a brief and sudden illness. He had already won South Carolina’s Republican primary last month with nearly 57% of the vote and was expected to face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in November.
Gov. Henry McMaster will appoint a temporary replacement to serve through Jan. 3, while state law requires a special primary to choose a new Republican nominee for the general election. Axios reported that Mace’s team plans to test her viability with polling this week.
Mace previously challenged Graham in the 2014 Republican Senate primary and finished fifth. She later won a state House seat in 2018 and entered Congress in 2020.
