Washington, D.C. — FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is assisting local authorities after U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham died Saturday night following what his office described as a brief and sudden illness.
Graham, 71, died after emergency responders were called to his Capitol Hill residence for a cardiac arrest, according to dispatch audio cited by The Independent and the Washington Examiner. A preliminary examination by the District of Columbia medical examiner found Graham died from an aortic dissection related to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to Graham’s office. Final findings are expected after additional toxicology and microscopic testing.
Patel said the FBI was “assisting local authorities” and had made “every necessary resource available.” The Washington Examiner reported there was no indication of foul play.
Graham’s death drew attention because he had recently returned from Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and continued pushing a Russia sanctions package with Sen. Richard Blumenthal. AP reported that Graham had just announced a bipartisan sanctions agreement with the White House before his death.
Online speculation followed Patel’s statement, but officials have not publicly linked Graham’s death to foreign policy, Ukraine, Russia, or any criminal act.
