Putnam County, Illinois — Putnam County Community Unit School District #535 is reviewing a social media comment reportedly made by a district paraprofessional after the post circulated among parents and online political accounts.
The Center Square reported that the post referenced President Donald Trump and Air Force One, drawing criticism after it was shared by Libs of TikTok and local community members. The district said it became aware of the comment and was reviewing the information it had received, but it did not identify the employee or comment on possible discipline.
Shannon Adcock, founder of Awake Illinois, criticized the post and said school employees should face consequences for comments she described as celebrating political violence. She also used the incident to criticize teacher unions and public school culture.
The controversy comes amid a wider national debate over public employees’ speech outside work. The Center Square previously reported that schools and other government entities have faced costly settlements after disciplining employees over personal social media comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Aaron Terr of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression told The Center Square that public anger over those settlements should be directed at governments that violate constitutional rights, not employees seeking to defend them.
