Louisville, Kentucky — Sen. Mitch McConnell said Sunday he remains unable to return to the Senate while recovering from a June fall and pneumonia, ending weeks of limited public information about his condition.

Reuters reported that McConnell said a June 14 fall at home left him briefly unconscious and led to hospitalization. While hospitalized, doctors also treated him for mild pneumonia. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican said he is now in a rehabilitation facility working on physical therapy and fall prevention.

The Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell’s fall was related to his post-polio condition and that medical evaluations found no broken bones, stroke, tumor, hemorrhage, heart attack, or other major condition. McConnell said he is still working with staff and remains in contact with Senate colleagues.

The Associated Press reported that Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear had urged McConnell to provide more information after weeks of speculation about his health. McConnell said he intends to complete his term, which ends Jan. 3, 2027.

His absence, along with Sen. Lindsey Graham’s recent death, temporarily narrows the Republican Senate majority.
