WASHINGTON, D.C. — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is drawing attention after remarks criticizing the press and invoking biblical imagery during recent Pentagon appearances.
At a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth compared members of the media to Pharisees, a Jewish religious group referenced in the New Testament, accusing reporters of bias against the Trump administration. The comments came shortly after a separate controversy involving a prayer he delivered during a Pentagon worship service.
Hegseth described the prayer as honoring a Combat Search and Rescue mission involving two U.S. aircrew shot down over Iran. However, observers noted that portions of the prayer closely resembled a monologue from the 1994 film “Pulp Fiction,” rather than a traditional religious text.
The remarks sparked criticism online and from political opponents, with some Democrats raising concerns about the blending of religion, military messaging, and political rhetoric. The comments also coincided with broader scrutiny of Hegseth, including articles of impeachment introduced by House Democrats related to his leadership at the Defense Department.
The developments come during heightened tensions tied to U.S. military actions involving Iran, as debates continue over executive authority, wartime conduct, and the administration’s relationship with the press.
