SAN DIEGO, California — Authorities have discovered an underground tunnel connecting Tijuana, Mexico, to the San Diego area, a passage investigators believe was used to facilitate the trafficking of drugs, weapons, and other contraband across the U.S.-Mexico border.
According to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the tunnel was uncovered during the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood. Investigators were initially looking into potential violations of Mexico’s firearms, explosives, and public health laws.
Officials said the tunnel stretches approximately 265 meters (about 870 feet) and runs more than 20 feet below ground. The passage reportedly included lighting, ventilation systems, and an electronic floor-mounted transport mechanism designed to move items between Mexico and the United States.
During the search of the property, authorities seized ammunition, suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, cell phones, and various documents. Investigators believe the location served as a storage, logistics, and trafficking hub for criminal organizations operating along the border.
The home is located south of the Otay Mesa area near California State Route 905, one of the busiest commercial crossing corridors between the United States and Mexico. Officials have not publicly identified which location in San Diego the tunnel may connect to, though investigators say it appears to reach a well-known street on the U.S. side.
The operation involved Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office, the Criminal Investigation Agency, federal prosecutors, and other members of the Mexican Security Cabinet. Authorities have seized the property and all evidence collected as the investigation continues. No arrests have been announced.
