COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA — Rep. Russell Fry entered the rapidly developing race for South Carolina’s open U.S. Senate seat Monday, promising to advance President Donald Trump’s agenda following the death of longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham.
“South Carolina, I’m in,” Fry wrote while announcing his campaign. The two-term Republican described himself as a “conservative MAGA candidate” and said his priorities would include reducing living costs, strengthening border security and supporting Trump.
Fry represents South Carolina’s 7th Congressional District, which includes Myrtle Beach, Florence and Georgetown. He joins Rep. Ralph Norman, businessman Duke Buckner and appliance-company executive Mark Lynch among Republicans seeking the nomination.
Graham died July 11 at age 71 after suffering an aortic tear. Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to serve the remainder of his current term. Trump has encouraged Nordone to seek a full term and offered his endorsement, although she has not announced a campaign.
The candidate filing period runs from July 21 through July 28. The Republican special primary is scheduled for Aug. 11, with a runoff on Aug. 25 if no candidate receives a majority. The eventual nominee will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the Nov. 3 general election.
