BEDMINSTER, NEW JERSEY — Military fighter jets intercepted three aircraft Sunday after more than 10 private planes entered temporarily restricted airspace over Bedminster and East Rutherford during President Donald Trump’s visit to New Jersey.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command said NORAD aircraft responded to three of the incursions. Pilots of two planes failed to respond immediately, prompting fighter jets to deploy flares to attract their attention. NORAD said the flares burn out rapidly and posed no danger to people on the ground.
The restrictions covered airspace near Trump’s Bedminster golf club and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, where the FIFA World Cup final was held. Trump attended the match with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Spain defeated defending champion Argentina 1-0 after Ferran Torres scored during extra time. The international event drew political leaders, celebrities and more than 80,000 spectators, leading authorities to implement heightened security throughout the region.
Neither NORAD nor the Federal Aviation Administration specifically attributed the restrictions to Trump or the championship match. Temporary flight restrictions are routinely established around presidential travel and major events involving national leaders.
NORAD urged private pilots to review federal flight notices before departure, saying airspace awareness remains a shared responsibility. A similar interception occurred near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida in March.
