NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — Federal authorities are investigating after an incendiary device erupted Monday morning outside a Lower Manhattan government building that houses several federal agencies and an immigration court.
The incident occurred near the entrance to 26 Federal Plaza at Worth and Lafayette streets. Preliminary reports indicated that fireworks and a flammable liquid had been placed inside or near a garbage container before igniting, producing flames and a large plume of smoke visible from the surrounding area.
Police officers took one man into custody at the scene. FBI Director Kash Patel said two people suffered minor injuries, although officials did not immediately provide details about how they were hurt. Authorities said no shots were fired, and there was no indication of an additional threat.
The 41-story building contains offices for the FBI, ICE, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and other agencies. It also houses a federal immigration court and a short-term detention facility used for people involved in immigration proceedings.
The FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation with assistance from the NYPD and FDNY. Traffic and public transportation were temporarily disrupted near the scene. Investigators had not announced a motive or identified the detained man as of Monday afternoon.
