NEW YORK CITY, NY — A closely watched New York City Council special election delivered an early setback to progressive allies of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, as a moderate-backed candidate emerged with a clear lead.

Preliminary results show Carl Wilson receiving about 43% of the vote in the District 3 race, ahead of Lindsey Boylan, who secured roughly 25%. Layla Law-Gisiko followed with about 20%. Because no candidate surpassed 50%, the race will proceed to a ranked-choice runoff to determine the final winner.

Boylan, a Democratic socialist aligned with Mamdani and supported by progressive groups, conceded the initial round. Her campaign had drawn attention as a test of the mayor’s political influence following his recent election victory.

Wilson, backed by City Council Speaker Julie Menin and other moderate Democrats, campaigned on issues including affordable housing, public safety, and protections for LGBTQ+ residents and immigrants. The district includes a significant LGBTQ voting base.

The seat became vacant after Erik Bottcher was elected to the New York State Senate. Outside groups, including political action committees aligned with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, were active in the race, adding to its broader political significance.

The outcome is expected to influence upcoming policy debates in the city, particularly around budget priorities and proposed tax increases.
