DETROIT, Michigan — Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed responded sharply Sunday after President Donald Trump posted side-by-side photographs contrasting himself and first lady Melania Trump with El-Sayed and his hijab-wearing wife, captioned “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.”
Trump also highlighted El-Sayed’s full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed. The Michigan candidate and his supporters have accused Republicans of emphasizing his Arabic name and Muslim identity as a way to portray him as foreign or threatening.
Appearing on CNN, El-Sayed agreed that the couples represented different visions, but turned the attack against Trump. He said he and his wife genuinely love each other and contrasted that with what he characterized as Trump’s pursuit of personal wealth and power. He then shifted to affordability, asking whether Americans can pay for gasoline and groceries and whether parents believe their children will have better lives.
El-Sayed later joked that he and his wife “actually” like each other while questioning the Trumps’ relationship. His comments about their marriage are political rhetoric, not an established fact.
Trump has intensified attacks on El-Sayed since his Democratic primary victory, accusing him of hating Jews and Israel. El-Sayed rejects that characterization, saying he respects Judaism and Jewish Americans while strongly opposing AIPAC and unconditional U.S. military support for Israel.
El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers in one of the year’s most closely watched Senate races.
