NEW YORK, New York — A New York City Council special election is drawing attention after Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsement sparked criticism from prominent LGBTQ+ leaders.

The race, set for April 28, will fill a vacant Manhattan seat long associated with LGBTQ+ representation, covering neighborhoods such as the West Village, Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen. Mamdani endorsed Lindsey Boylan, while several influential LGBTQ+ leaders backed Carl Wilson, an openly gay candidate and former chief of staff to the previous councilmember.

Critics argue the district has historically been represented by openly gay officials and was originally drawn to ensure LGBTQ+ political representation. Some leaders expressed concern that backing a different candidate could weaken that legacy.

Supporters of Boylan point to her record on issues such as affordability and equity, while others argue that shared identity should not be the sole factor in representation. The mayor has previously supported LGBTQ+ initiatives, including creating a city office focused on LGBTQIA+ affairs.

The election comes as the City Council prepares for budget negotiations, adding political significance to the outcome as alliances within city government continue to evolve.
