NEW YORK — The New York Republican Party is backing New York City Councilwoman Vickie Palladino as she challenges ethics charges filed by the New York City Council over social media posts criticized as Islamophobic.
State Republican Party Chair Ed Cox said the party “stands unequivocally” with Palladino, calling the charges politically motivated. The City Council’s standards and ethics committee voted earlier this month to pursue action over posts in which Palladino criticized members of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration and shared statements calling for restrictions on Muslims in Western countries.
Council Speaker Julie Menin said the comments were “unacceptable and deeply Islamophobic.” Palladino has denied wrongdoing and filed a lawsuit seeking to block the council from holding a final vote on whether to censure her.
A state judge declined to issue a temporary restraining order but scheduled a hearing for early April to review the legal challenge. Palladino argues the disciplinary action could set a precedent that discourages elected officials from expressing controversial political views.
