WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats have asked the Justice Department to investigate former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for allegedly making false statements during congressional oversight hearings earlier this month.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the top Democrats on the Senate and House Judiciary Committees, sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting a perjury investigation. They argue that several statements made by Noem during March 3 and 4 hearings may have violated federal laws prohibiting perjury and false statements to Congress.
The lawmakers pointed to testimony about whether the Department of Homeland Security complied with federal court orders, as well as statements about a $220 million DHS advertising campaign. They said the testimony conflicted with other public statements and evidence.
A DHS spokesperson rejected the allegations, calling the claims “categorically false.” The Justice Department is not required to act on the criminal referral and has not indicated whether it will open an investigation.
