New York — Several House Democrats from New York are urging an investigation into the Justice Department’s efforts to prosecute New York Attorney General Letitia James, arguing the actions may represent political retaliation tied to her criticism of President Donald Trump.
In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Rep. Jamie Raskin and members of the New York Democratic delegation asked the Justice Department to preserve documents related to attempts to indict James. The lawmakers argued that previous efforts to charge the attorney general suggest possible misuse of federal prosecutorial power.
James was indicted by a federal grand jury in October on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. She denied wrongdoing and said the charges were politically motivated. A federal judge later dismissed the indictment after ruling the prosecutor assigned to the case had been unlawfully appointed.
Federal prosecutors reportedly attempted to bring additional indictments after the dismissal, but grand juries declined to issue charges. Lawmakers said the Justice Department’s continued efforts to pursue the case raise concerns about whether prosecutors are being pressured to move forward without sufficient evidence.
