RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger is facing a sharply divided electorate just two months into her term, according to a new Washington Post–Schar School poll.

The survey found 47% of voters approve of Spanberger’s performance, while 46% disapprove and 7% remain undecided. The near-even split highlights early polarization despite her decisive 15-point victory in the 2025 election and reputation as a centrist Democrat.

Support remains strong among Democrats, with more than 80% approving of her leadership. However, opposition among Republicans is overwhelming, approaching 90%, with a significant share strongly disapproving. Independent voters are nearly evenly divided, marking a shift from her stronger support among that group during the election.

Political analysts note that Spanberger’s approval rating falls below historical norms for Virginia governors at similar points in their terms. George Mason University’s Mark Rozell described the early polarization as unusual, particularly given her bipartisan messaging during the campaign.

In office, Spanberger has advanced policies focused on healthcare access and affordable housing while working with Democratic lawmakers to avoid tax increases. However, her positions on immigration enforcement and redistricting have drawn criticism from Republicans.
