New York City, New York — The administration of Mayor Zohran Mamdani is seeking to withdraw from representing former Mayor Eric Adams in a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault, according to a court filing.
The lawsuit accuses Adams of assaulting a woman in 1993 while he was a police officer. Adams has denied the allegation and said he does not recall meeting the accuser. The city’s corporation counsel argued that Adams is not entitled to taxpayer-funded legal representation because the alleged conduct did not occur within the scope of his official duties.
A spokesperson for Mamdani said the decision was made independently by the corporation counsel, as required by law, and not directed by the mayor. The move comes months after a contentious election in which Mamdani defeated Adams, who later withdrew and endorsed former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The case was filed under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily extended the statute of limitations for sexual assault claims. The city had previously called the allegations “ludicrous” and expected Adams to be vindicated in court.
