Washington, D.C. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer left President Donald Trump’s Cabinet on Monday, with the White House naming Deputy Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling as acting secretary after weeks of mounting misconduct allegations and internal turmoil at the Labor Department. The resignation makes Chavez-DeRemer the third Trump Cabinet member to leave in recent weeks, following the departures of Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi.

The White House said Chavez-DeRemer was leaving to enter the private sector, while communications director Steven Cheung praised her work on labor policy and worker training. But her exit followed reports of multiple investigations into her conduct, including allegations that she had an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate, drank alcohol on the job, and used staff for personal matters. Reuters and AP also reported that the inspector general’s review widened as complaints mounted and several Labor Department officials were pushed out.

Chavez-DeRemer had been an unusual Republican Cabinet pick because of past union backing and bipartisan Senate support during her 2025 confirmation. During her tenure, however, the department also advanced a deregulatory agenda that drew criticism from labor advocates and workplace safety experts. Sonderling now steps in as acting secretary as the department continues to face scrutiny over management and conduct issues.
