WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) warned Thursday that Republicans could face significant losses in the 2026 midterm elections, predicting that President Donald Trump would endure “the most miserable two years of his life” if Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives.
In comments to The New York Times highlighted by The Hill, Cornyn said he believes Republicans are at risk of losing their House majority in November. He argued that Trump’s leadership style and demands for loyalty have created divisions within the Republican Party and alienated some longtime conservatives.
Cornyn recently lost his Republican primary race, ending his bid for another Senate term. Following that defeat, he suggested he now has greater freedom to openly criticize Trump and discuss concerns about the party’s direction.
The Texas senator also responded to Trump’s recent comment that Cornyn would remain a friend despite the primary loss. Cornyn replied, “If that’s the way friends treat you, you wonder about his enemies.”
Cornyn argued that Trump often expects complete loyalty from Republican elected officials and critics alike. He said that approach could prove politically costly if it discourages dissenting voices and weakens party unity heading into the midterms.
Historically, the president’s party often loses congressional seats during midterm elections. Republicans currently hold a narrow House majority, making control of the chamber one of the most closely watched political battles of 2026.
Despite his criticism, Cornyn said he plans to continue working with colleagues during the remainder of his term and hopes to make the next several months productive. The senator’s comments place him among a small but growing group of Republican figures publicly questioning Trump’s political strategy as the midterm campaign season intensifies.
