Hanover, Maryland – Former President Joe Biden urged Maryland Democrats to mobilize for the general election during a keynote speech Saturday night at the state party’s “Fight Back & Win” gala.

Speaking at Maryland Live! casino in Hanover, Biden criticized President Donald Trump and accused him of profiting from the presidency. He called on Democrats to organize, saying, “It’s time to get up, dammit. Get up. Get up, now.”

The event came days after Maryland’s primary elections and served as a kickoff for the party’s general-election campaign. Gov. Wes Moore, Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Rep. Jamie Raskin, and other state and federal Democratic officials attended.

Van Hollen and Raskin also used their remarks to criticize the Trump administration and argue that Democrats should focus on defending democratic institutions. Raskin, a former constitutional law professor, drew applause by rejecting white Christian nationalism and citing the First Amendment’s limits on government establishment of religion.

Moore, who faces Republican Dan Cox in November, said Democrats have an opportunity not only to push back but to “push forward.”
