Washington, D.C. – Sen. Chris Murphy is promoting legislation that would gradually raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $25, arguing Democrats need bigger economic proposals to win back working-class voters.

Murphy introduced the Living Wage for All Act last week. The bill would raise the federal minimum wage to $12 in the first year, require large corporate employers to reach $25 by 2032, and give other businesses until 2039 to comply.

Speaking Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Murphy said Democrats should more directly confront corporate power and rising inequality. He argued that a higher wage floor could appeal to some voters who backed President Donald Trump but remain concerned about the economy.

The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 since 2009. Democrats have previously pushed smaller increases, including a $17 minimum wage proposal backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Bobby Scott.

Supporters say higher wages would help workers afford basic costs. Critics and budget analysts warn large wage hikes could increase labor costs and reduce employment for some low-wage workers.
