New York, New York – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani laughed off a new centrist Democratic manifesto rejecting socialism and defended his support for progressive candidates who won major New York primaries last week.
Appearing on ABC News’s “This Week,” Mamdani said he had no interest in “writing a manifesto” or “reading one,” arguing that his focus is on delivering results in New York City.
The manifesto, backed by Rep. Josh Gottheimer and other moderate Democrats, says the party should embrace capitalism, entrepreneurship, and a competitive economy. It followed primary victories by Mamdani-backed democratic socialist candidates, including Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, and progressive former city Comptroller Brad Lander.
Mamdani said the wins showed Democratic voters want a politics focused on working people. He pointed to his administration’s rent freeze, free childcare for 2-year-olds, tenant protections, pothole repairs, and public safety record as evidence that democratic socialist policies can govern effectively.
The exchange highlights a growing Democratic Party divide between centrists warning that socialism could hurt the party nationally and progressives arguing that affordability-focused policies are winning voters.
