Washington, D.C. – Most registered U.S. voters strongly support America’s founding principles, but a majority also believe the country is not living up to them, according to The Center Square’s Voters’ Voice Poll.

The poll found that 86% of registered voters support ideals such as life, liberty, free speech, freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, equal treatment under the law, and government by consent of the people. Only 31% said those principles are being practiced well today.

Support for the ideals crossed party lines, with 89% of Republicans, 85% of Democrats, and 79% of independents expressing support. But confidence in how those principles are being applied was much lower, especially among Democrats and independents.

Pollster Mike Noble of Noble Predictive Insights said voters are not rejecting America’s founding values, but many doubt the political system is healthy enough to uphold them.

The poll was conducted June 1-4 among 2,585 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 1.93 percentage points.
