Republican candidates who challenged, denied or cast doubt on the 2020 presidential election are seeking governor or secretary of state offices in six competitive states this November, positions that could play significant roles in administering the 2028 presidential election.
The seven candidates are:
- Arizona Gov.: Andy Biggs — Voted against accepting Arizona and Pennsylvania’s electoral votes and urged further review of Arizona’s results. He faces Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs.
- Arizona Secretary of State: Alex Kolodin — Represented lawsuits challenging Arizona’s 2020 results and later represented fake electors. He faces Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes.
- Georgia Gov.: Rick Jackson — Previously called the 2020 result “totally ridiculous,” although his campaign now says he acknowledges Joe Biden won. He faces Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms.
- Michigan Gov.: John James — Has called the 2020 election “rigged” while previously acknowledging Biden was duly elected. He faces Democrat Jocelyn Benson.
- Nevada Secretary of State: Jim Marchant — Has repeatedly promoted claims that the 2020 election was stolen and supported Nevada’s fake-elector effort. He faces Democratic incumbent Cisco Aguilar.
- Pennsylvania Gov.: Stacy Garrity — Said at a 2022 Trump rally, “We know that he won,” but now says she recognizes Biden was elected. She faces Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro.
- Wisconsin Gov.: Tom Tiffany — Voted against Arizona and Pennsylvania electoral votes and has alleged 2020 “improprieties,” though he now says Biden won. He faces Democrat David Crowley.
Governors and secretaries of state have important roles in election administration and certification, making these races relevant well beyond 2026.
