WASHINGTON, D.C. — Firearms were involved in nearly three-quarters of veteran suicide deaths in 2023, according to a new analysis of federal data that highlights continuing concerns about suicide among former members of the U.S. military.

The report, released by Everytown for Gun Safety and based on data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, found that approximately 18 veterans die by suicide each day. Of those deaths, about 13 involve firearms.

According to the analysis, firearms were used in roughly 75% of veteran suicides in 2023, up from about two-thirds of cases in 2001. While veterans make up a relatively small percentage of the U.S. population, they account for nearly 20% of all firearm suicide deaths nationwide.

The report found that the veteran firearm suicide rate increased by approximately 67% between 2001 and 2023, compared with a 35% increase among non-veteran adults during the same period. Researchers noted that firearm ownership rates are significantly higher among veterans, with roughly half reporting access to firearms compared with about one-fifth of non-veteran adults.

Studies cited in the report found that firearm ownership is associated with a substantially higher risk of suicide and that suicide attempts involving firearms are far more likely to be fatal than attempts using other methods.

The analysis also found a shift in demographics. Veterans between the ages of 18 and 34 now experience the highest suicide rates among former service members, replacing older age groups that historically had the highest rates. While men account for most veteran suicides, firearm suicide rates among female veterans have increased more rapidly in recent years.

Experts note that suicide risk is influenced by multiple factors, including mental health conditions, substance abuse, chronic pain, financial stress, housing instability, and challenges associated with transitioning from military service to civilian life.
