SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The California Democratic Party endorsed a slate of veteran congressional incumbents at its San Francisco convention, signaling a strategy focused on experience rather than elevating newer, more populist challengers ahead of November’s midterms.

According to CalMatters, the party backed long-serving lawmakers including Rep. Mike Thompson, 74, seeking a 15th term, and Rep. Brad Sherman, 71, pursuing a 16th. In open races, party leaders largely supported established state lawmakers over grassroots outsiders.

The endorsements drew criticism from some progressive candidates who argue the party risks alienating younger voters. Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang, who challenged Rep. Doris Matsui, questioned internal procedures after Matsui secured the endorsement. Jake Levine, running against Sherman, said Democrats must articulate a forward-looking vision addressing housing costs and job scarcity rather than relying solely on anti-Trump messaging.

Meanwhile, in the competitive 22nd Congressional District, the party declined to endorse after Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains and educator Randy Villegas split delegate support.

Party leaders defended the approach, arguing seasoned lawmakers are better positioned to navigate high-stakes congressional battles as Democrats seek to regain control of the U.S. House.
