Washington, D.C. – Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene sided with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday after Meloni rejected President Donald Trump’s claim that she “begged” him for a photo at the Group of Seven summit in France.
“I believe @GiorgiaMeloni, she’s great!” Greene wrote on social media, adding, “Trump lies. Constantly.”
The dispute began after Trump told Italian broadcaster La7 that Meloni wanted a photo with him “so badly” and that he agreed because he “felt sorry for her.” Meloni responded in a video statement, calling the claim fabricated and saying, “Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
The remarks triggered a diplomatic backlash in Italy. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled a planned U.S. visit, saying Trump’s comments were “serious and offensive” toward Meloni and Italy.
The dispute comes as U.S.-Italy relations have been strained by the Iran war and Meloni’s criticism of civilian casualties. It also reflects Greene’s growing split with Trump, whom she has criticized over foreign conflicts and the Epstein files after years as one of his most visible Republican allies.
