Washington, D.C. – Councilmember Janeese Lewis George is poised to become Washington, D.C.’s next mayor after former Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie conceded the Democratic primary Thursday.

Decision Desk HQ projected Lewis George to win with about 53% of the vote. The Associated Press reported that McDuffie conceded before final certification, with Lewis George appearing to clear the 50% threshold needed to avoid ranked-choice tabulation. In heavily Democratic D.C., the primary winner is strongly favored in November.

Lewis George, a former prosecutor and democratic socialist, campaigned on affordability, child care, housing, utility costs, and a stronger response to federal intervention in local affairs. McDuffie focused more heavily on public safety and support from the business community.

The race followed Mayor Muriel Bowser’s decision not to seek another term, creating the city’s first open mayoral contest in two decades. It also unfolded amid conflict with President Donald Trump, who has threatened greater federal control over D.C. if Lewis George becomes mayor.

Her expected win adds Washington to a growing list of major cities where democratic socialist candidates have gained ground, including New York and Seattle, though local issues such as housing costs, policing, and home rule dominated the D.C. race.
