Menlo Park, California – Israel’s government asked Meta to remove Facebook and Instagram posts related to the Iran war, including some posts supportive of Iran or critical of Israel, according to internal company records reviewed by The Intercept.
The records reportedly show that Israel’s Ministry of Justice submitted takedown requests involving posts mourning Iranian leaders, supporting Iranian missile retaliation, sharing military analysis favorable to Tehran, or showing missile impacts inside Israel. The Intercept reported that Meta complied with some requests, though the company did not say how many were granted.
Meta said content is reviewed under its own rules, regardless of who flags it. “Anyone is able to report content they think violates our rules,” spokesperson Daniel Roberts told The Intercept. Meta also bars many forms of praise or support for groups it designates as dangerous organizations, including Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The reporting adds to long-running concerns about wartime content moderation. A prior Meta-commissioned audit found Arabic content faced higher rates of mistaken removal than Hebrew content, and Human Rights Watch has accused Meta of suppressing Palestinian speech.
Israel has also restricted domestic reporting on Iranian missile strike locations, citing wartime security concerns.
