Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul on Sunday asked the state Supreme Court to block billionaire Elon Musk from giving $1 million each to two voters at a planned rally in Green Bay, arguing the act violates election law prohibiting anything of value in exchange for a vote.
The request comes ahead of Tuesday’s pivotal state Supreme Court election, where control of the liberal-leaning court is at stake. Lower courts rejected Kaul’s initial attempt to halt the payments on Saturday.
Musk plans to award the money at a rally supporting conservative candidate Brad Schimel, who is backed by both Musk and former President Donald Trump. Schimel is running against liberal candidate Susan Crawford. Trump-aligned groups have spent over $20 million in support of Schimel.
Musk’s political action committee employed a similar tactic before the 2024 presidential election, offering payments for petition signers in battleground states. A Pennsylvania judge allowed that effort to proceed, ruling it didn’t constitute an illegal lottery.
