Denver, Colorado — An Egyptian mother and her five children have returned home after a legal battle involving their detention and re-arrest by immigration authorities, raising questions about compliance with federal court orders.
The El Gamal family had been held for months at an ICE detention facility in Texas before a federal judge ordered their release on April 23. After returning to Colorado, they were re-arrested days later, prompting their attorney to argue the government acted unlawfully.
Immigration officials have defended their actions, stating the family was connected to an individual accused in a high-profile attack, though the family has denied any involvement. The Department of Homeland Security said it remains committed to enforcing immigration laws and expects the courts to ultimately support its position.
Following the re-arrest, a federal judge intervened again, halting deportation efforts and ordering the family’s release. The family was briefly placed on a flight out of state before authorities complied with the court directive and returned them to Colorado.
