Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has refused to testify before a Republican-led Georgia state Senate panel investigating her. Willis, who is currently indicting former President Trump for alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, stated that she doesn’t believe the committee has the authority to subpoena her.

The controversy surrounding Willis’s case escalated after it was revealed that she had a romantic relationship with someone she hired for the case. Despite this, a judge ruled that she could continue the prosecution if she or special prosecutor Nathan Wade stepped down, which Wade did.

The state Senate is now investigating whether Willis and Wade misused taxpayer dollars during their relationship. County Commission Chair Robb Pitts testified that the board has little control over Willis’s spending once her budget is approved.

State Sen. Bill Cowsert maintains that the committee can make Willis testify about her spending and warned that she could be held in contempt if she doesn’t cooperate. Willis, who is running for reelection, will face Democratic challenger Christian Wise Smith in the primary on May 21. Despite the controversy, Willis remains defiant, stating, “I don’t care how many times they threaten me. I will gladly leave this place knowing that I did God’s work.”
