Earlier this week, The Detroit News reported that several individuals at a Donald Trump campaign event in Michigan wearing “Auto Workers for Trump” shirts were not actually auto workers. UAW President Shawn Fain was not surprised by the revelation, calling Trump’s actions a “con” during a call organized by the Kamala Harris campaign.
Fain, a fierce Trump critic, praised Harris for supporting labor while accusing Trump of serving only himself. Fain also cited Trump’s past anti-union record and criticized his praise of Elon Musk for allegedly threatening to fire striking workers.
Despite Fain’s condemnation, the “Auto Workers for Trump” group is real, but not all attendees in the T-shirts were auto workers. At a rally in Detroit, six individuals wearing the shirts told reporters they weren’t auto workers, with two admitting they received the shirts from the group’s founder, Brian Pannebecker.
Fain also argued that union gains could be jeopardized if Trump returns to office.
