Doha, Qatar — The U.S. military carried out targeted strikes Sunday against Iranian missile launch sites and vessels allegedly attempting to lay naval mines near the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM described the operation as a limited “self-defense” action intended to protect American personnel and military assets operating in the region amid ongoing tensions with Iran and fragile ceasefire negotiations underway in Qatar.
According to the military, U.S. forces targeted missile launch positions and several boats near southern Iran after intelligence indicated preparations to threaten shipping routes and American forces near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil transit corridors.
Iranian state-linked media reported explosions near Bandar Abbas and claimed several members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were killed in the strikes. Tehran condemned the operation as a violation of the current truce framework and accused Washington of undermining ongoing diplomatic negotiations.
The military action occurred while U.S. and Iranian negotiators continued talks in Qatar focused on sanctions relief, regional security, and reopening maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after months of escalating military tensions.
Despite the latest confrontation, both sides publicly signaled that diplomatic discussions remain active, though major disagreements continue over Iran’s nuclear program and regional military activity.
