Washington, D.C. — Republican candidates who challenged or questioned the 2020 presidential election results are running for secretary of state in several battleground states, potentially placing them in influential election-related positions ahead of 2028.
In Arizona, Republican nominee Alexander Kolodin is challenging Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes. Kolodin participated in lawsuits challenging the 2020 and 2022 election results and has advocated tighter voter identification requirements. President Donald Trump endorsed him in July. KJZZ independently reported that Kolodin was involved in multiple unsuccessful challenges to previous election results.
Nevada Republican Jim Marchant is again challenging Democratic Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar. Marchant has repeatedly disputed President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory and previously organized a coalition of Republican secretary of state candidates who questioned that election. His platform includes requiring proof of citizenship, ending universal mail voting and expanding hand counts.
In Wisconsin, Republican nominee Jay Schroeder has said he would not have certified the state’s 2020 presidential results. He is campaigning to dismantle the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission, which currently administers elections statewide.
Secretary of state responsibilities vary significantly by state, but in Arizona and Nevada the offices oversee major portions of election administration.
The contests come as Trump continues pushing states to tighten voter-registration rules and provide the federal government greater access to voter-roll information.
